Commemorative medal Foreign Operations or Missions

The Commemorative Medal for Foreign Missions or Operations (large model) is an official Belgian decoration awarded to military personnel and Defence staff who have taken part in missions or operations abroad.

It was established to recognise those who have made a lasting and exemplary contribution to international missions. The medal may be awarded to any service member who has effectively participated for at least 30 days in a foreign mission or operation.

The medal is struck in bronze-coloured metal and is round in shape. The obverse shows the Belgian coat of arms with the crowned lion, surrounded by the inscription: “FOREIGN MISSIONS OR OPERATIONS – BUITENLANDSE OPDRACHTEN OF OPERATIES”.

The decoration is suspended from a yellow moiré ribbon, edged with two black stripes each containing a fine green stripe. This colour combination symbolises strength, vigilance, and the international dimension of the missions undertaken. The large model is the official version worn on the uniform during ceremonial occasions.
