Description

The Medal of Freedom, established in 1945 by President Truman, is a U.S. civilian decoration awarded to individuals who made exceptional contributions to Allied war efforts. The medal is a round bronze disc featuring the profile of the Statue of Freedom and the word "FREEDOM" on the obverse, with the Liberty Bell and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" on the reverse. It hangs from a red moiré ribbon with four slender white stripes. In some cases, the medal was issued with bronze, silver, or gold palm devices to denote multiple awards. This medal is a rare and evocative piece of Allied civilian history and is highly prized by collectors of World War II memorabilia.
